I hope you enjoy this opinion on networking  written by Karin Conway, Your Connections Coach, helping you connect to the people and resources you need to succeed.

What Is Networking?

If you asked my husband this question, the IT guy, he would probably give you some long answer about connectivity, systems, servers, data and on and on. But in my world it’s much simpler. My version of networking goes something like this…

Networking is the art of building your sphere of influence through deliberate attempts to connect to other humans and display a definite purpose of helping others. (Notice I didn’t say anything about sales, marketing and all the other things we might normally associate with networking.)

Networking in business is NOT all about perfecting your sales pitch and trying to get in front of as many people as possible to barf a sales pitch on them and hope that something sticks. In my years of experience in business networking, I have experienced far too many of these “regurgitators” who truly don’t know any better. It’s really too bad because most of them are genuinely nice people. It’s just that, for whatever reason, they didn’t learn (or weren’t taught) the true meaning of networking. But, whether the person is nice or not, if they barf on me once, I’m probably not going to give them a chance to do it again.

It is a skill, business networking. So it does take some professionals a little time to mature and figure out the ins and outs. This may be because there are many different networking groups, each with their own style and philosophy of how things should be done. Someone may first be exposed to a rigid group with a long list of rules, a group, for example, that insists on members having a perfectly rehearsed elevator pitch.

While it’s not a bad thing to have your pitch fine-tuned so you sound like you have a clue, I don’t feel your speech should sound rehearsed. I was a part of far too many of these groups in the past and the constant pitch rehearsal bored me.

That said, I like real people. My opinion of people has little to do with how well they rehearsed their elevator speech. When you meet someone for the first time, instead of being very rigid, holding back everything for fear of rejection and hiding behind an elevator speech, why not try opening up and be honest to see what happens?

I think you will find that most people see this as a breath of fresh air and will open up to you and let you into their inner circle that much faster. When you share something personal, you also open up the possibility of finding commonalities with your new business associate.

Who knows, you might even make a new friend. I like to just be me and see how people react. Some are way too tightly wound to handle this. They memorize and rehearse their pitch and that’s all they know. If I schedule a get-to-know-you meeting and the person immediately pulls out all their sales slicks to put on a show for me…the show is over. Sorry! It’s people first, then you can work on the sales and marketing—later, after we get to know each other.

Networking is fun

I get so excited when one of my friends comes to me and says, “Karin, I know you know everybody—who do you know who can help me with….?” It is such a great feeling to be the “connector.” I get to do this a lot simply because I have made it a habit to meet a lot of new people all the time and get to know them personally. If I have a good feeling about you as a person, I probably would trust you to be a service provider for myself or for someone I care about. Since I have a large network of trusted professionals, it’s that much more likely that I can refer business back and forth.

My advice to you

Get to know as many people as you can to hone your networking skills to make connections. This will put you in a different realm. “I see you everywhere” is a line I hear frequently. Since I have so many connections and frequently organize events to bring people together, I’m very active on LinkedIn and other social media sites. Even though I may not have seen someone for the better part of a year, they still see my smiling face online and it keeps me “top of mind.” When they do have a need, I’m the one they think of to ask for help.

If you make a positive habit of getting to know many people, this will happen to you.

Networking…

Involves building your sphere of influence

Is the opportunity to connect with other humans

Involves helping others succeed

Includes sharing something personal to be “real”

Includes finding people you can trust to add to your inner circle

Is all about people

Is great fun because you get to meet new people and learn from them

Networking Is Not…

Regurgitating facts

A sales call

A chance to pitch

A marketing free-for-all

A perfectly rehearsed system

Your Daily Focus: Colored Animals

10.26.2011

Colored Animals

Here’s a really fun way to gain insight into yourself and others. I would like you to play along with me and simply answer the following questions. So please grab a pen and paper and write down your answer to the following four questions:

What is your favorite color? Not for your clothing or for your car, or the walls of your living room, but simply your favorite. Let your answer be the color whose essence you like the most.

Now, choose three or four adjectives that describe that color. What is it about that color that you like. What does that color represent specifically to you?

What is your favorite animal? Not for a pet, but simply the one animal in all the animal kingdom that you admire most.

Now, again, choose three or four adjectives that describe that animal. What is it about your animal specifically that you like and admire. What is it that makes that animal special to you?

Okay, save your list. Tomorrow I will describe how to interpret your answers. You will gain insight to yourself.

If you can, share this quiz with others you know well or work with. It will provide great insights to better understanding them, and getting along better.

Have fun with it, and I will see you tomorrow with the amazing next step.

http://www.rickschaefermd.com/blog/general/daily-focus-colored-animals/

Your Daily Focus: Yellow Penguin  10.27.2011

Sometimes the deepest insights into ourselves and others can come from the simplest places. We need simply to pay attention.

If you have not answered the four questions from yesterday’s Daily Focus, please go back and do it before you read this post. Yesterday’s Focus is called “Colored Animals” and can be found at http://www.rickschaefermd.com/blog/general/daily-focus-colored-animals/

Here is the interpretation of your four answers from yesterday. You should have your answers to the four questions on paper in front of you. Here we go:

The color represents how you see yourself. What is your essence, as you see it from your personal view point? It actually does not matter what color you have chosen, it is simply the descriptive words that you chose that reveal the truth of your self-image.

If you chose blue, it might represent warm and comfortable to you, or strong and powerful, or easy and “goes with everything,” or vibrant and stimulating, or independent and self-sufficient. It is the description that provides the insight to your self-image.

The animal represents how you desire others to see you. These are the characteristics that you want others to see in you, and admire in you. It is not the animal, but the descriptive terms you chose to go with the animal. You might choose a cheetah because they are strong and fierce, or sleek and athletic, or graceful and delicate, or nurturing and playful.

Again, many of us pick the same animal, like a dog or cat or dolphin or deer, but our descriptive terms will always be the revealing factor. Understanding how another person sees themself and desires to be seen by others can be extraordinarily helpful in our dealing with them.

Treating others in the way they desire to be treated is far more helpful than treating them the way you would want to be treated. Think about that for a bit, it is extremely insightful.

Please share your findings with me and all the other readers by posting a comment below. We would all love to hear not only what your answers were, but what insight you may have learned about yourself and someone else.

Oh, by the way, I am a Yellow Penguin!

Enjoy,

Rick

This event will transform the way you look at price and profits forever!

Kevin is a true inspiration to business owners. With his help and a little motivation, many people have transformed their businesses using his techniques. I am a regular attendee of Kevin’s 2nd Thursday GKIC  (Glazer Kennedy Insiders Circle) meetings and they have definitely changed me and my business in a big way. I wholeheartedly recommend Kevin every chance I get.

For the quality of product that Kevin delivers this seminar should sell for $200/pp.  He is offering this one time only at a rate of $20 per person. We would do it for free to give you a taste…but then all the slackers with no skin in the game would show up. We only want motivated professionals who are willing to commit to make changes in their business. I hope that’s you. 🙂

This week our focus member is Ken Goltz. He could really use our help with helping those individuals who are turning 65 and are now eligible for Medicare. He can offer them solutions to healthcare that doesn’t cost them any extra. Wow…not a lot of people can say that. Let’s show Ken how we can all come together and help a fellow member and friend. You can reach him in the following ways;

Coach’s Corner with Dr Rick Schaefer, MD

Studies have shown that when humans converse face to face, 58% of the message is conveyed by body language, 35% by inflection and the tone of our voice, and only 7% by our actual words.  As you reflect on this, you know it is true.  Consider how many times in your life your words have been misinterpreted.

How many times have you asked a question of someone and gotten an answer to an entirely different question.  How many times have you sent an email and gotten a response that had nothing to do with the words you sent.  Reflect on the phone conversations you have had just this week, and consider how many times have you been misinterpreted over the phone recently.  It’s astounding, isn’t it?

So let’s use the statistics above to evaluate the effectiveness of communication at work.  Meeting in person and being a clear speaker and a great listener is 100% effective.  Speaking by phone only includes the words you choose (7%) and the tone and inflection of your voice (35%) for a total of 42% effectiveness… a big drop!  Using email rests solely on your words carrying your message effectively, with only a 7% chance of clarity.  Seven percent… wow!

My recommendation for effective communication is to use email only for the purpose of transferring pure information:  meeting times, schedule changes, attachments of documents or reports.

In summary, if you own a business or manage a department, resist the idea to bring efficiencies in by emphasizing emails and project management software in place of live phone calls and in person meetings. Remember, with the statistics above, a short walk or drive or computer video chat to have an in person conversation can increase the effectiveness 13 fold over sending an email.

Raise your effectiveness from 7% to 100%, and go and chat in person.

Enjoy,

Dr Rick
